Frequently asked questions
If your question isn't here, send me a message.
Who do you tutor?
I work with three main groups: native English speakers who want help with grammar, writing and literature; neurodivergent learners, including autistic students and students with ADHD or anxiety; and professionals who want to speak English with more confidence and eloquence. I also teach English as a second language and exam preparation.
Do you tutor native English speakers in grammar and literature?
Yes. I tutor school-age students and adults whose first language is English: grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, essay writing, and reading and analyzing novels, plays and poetry. I studied at the University of Oxford, and I enjoy helping students read closely and write clearly.
Do you work with autistic students and students with ADHD or anxiety?
Yes. I work with neurodivergent children, teens and adults, including autistic learners and students with ADHD, anxiety or other additional needs. I'm completing a master's in clinical mental health counseling and hold a degree in psychology, so I'm well prepared to adapt lessons to each person. Lessons are tutoring, not therapy, and I work alongside a student's school and specialists, never instead of them.
Do you teach business English and professional communication?
Yes. I help professionals speak with confidence and eloquence in meetings, presentations, interviews and leadership roles, drawing on 17 years of director-level experience in healthcare, insurance and professional services. This works for professionals whose first language is English as well as those for whom it's a second language.
Do you teach English as a second language (ESL)?
Yes. I teach adults and teens learning English from beginner to advanced (CEFR A1–C2), including conversation, pronunciation and exam preparation for IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge exams.
What language are lessons taught in?
All lessons are conducted in English, and that's no barrier for beginners. I've taught many students who were just starting out, and lessons are clear, patient and paced so you can follow from the very first class. This website is available in other languages so you can understand what's offered before you book.
Are lessons online or in person?
All lessons are online, by live video, one to one. I'm based in Virginia, USA, and teach students across the United States and around the world.
How much do lessons cost?
The standard rate is US$75 per lesson hour. A standard lesson is 50 minutes of focused teaching. Discounts are available for lesson packages and regular weekly schedules.
How long is a lesson?
Standard lessons are 50 minutes, but lesson length can be adjusted to the student. Some students do better with shorter sessions, and some want longer ones.
What ages do you teach?
I teach adults and students aged 10 and up. If your child is younger, please get in touch first so we can talk about whether it's a good fit. For students under 18, please make sure your child knows about the lessons and wants to take part before you book. Students who choose to be there make real progress. A parent or guardian also needs to be present for the first lesson.
What is a class summary?
A class summary is a written record of the lesson, sent after class. It covers what we worked on, corrections and new vocabulary where relevant, and next steps. For younger students, it gives parents a clear account of the session.
How do I book a lesson?
Use the booking page. You answer a few quick questions about the student and their goals, then choose a time from my calendar at least 48 hours ahead. I'll email you to confirm the lesson time, with an invoice. Reply to confirm, and pay at least 24 hours before the lesson. If I haven't received your confirmation and payment by then, I reserve the right to cancel the lesson.
Do you offer a free trial lesson?
No. The first lesson is a full lesson at the standard rate of US$75, paid in advance. It's how we learn about each other, establish goals, and how I assess the current level so I can plan lessons around the student's needs. If I decide we're not a good fit, I'll refund the full cost of the lesson.
What if I need to change or cancel my first lesson?
If you let me know more than 24 hours before the lesson, you can reschedule and your full payment carries over to the new time as a credit. If you'd rather cancel altogether, I'll refund 50% of the lesson fee; the rest covers the preparation I've already done. Within 24 hours of the lesson, or if you don't join the lesson, the fee isn't refunded. If I ever need to cancel, you'll receive a full refund or a new time, whichever you prefer.
What if I'm running late?
There's a 15-minute grace period for every lesson. I'll wait up to 15 minutes for you to join. Lesson time is reserved from the scheduled start to the scheduled end, so a late start means a shorter lesson rather than a later finish. If you haven't joined or contacted me within 15 minutes, the lesson counts as missed. If something comes up, it's always best to contact me as soon as possible.
How do I pay for lessons after the first one?
Once you're signed up, you can buy a discounted package of lessons or pay after lessons. Only the first lesson has to be paid in advance.
What happens in the first lesson?
The first lesson is a chance for us to learn about each other, establish goals, and for me to assess the current level so I can adapt future lessons to the student's needs. It may feel like a relaxed conversation, but I'm evaluating throughout, so I can build the plan for the lessons ahead. It's also how we find out whether we're a good fit. For students under 18, a parent or guardian needs to be present for the first lesson, although the lesson stays focused on the student.
What time zones do you teach in?
I'm on US Eastern Time, and my booking calendar shows available times in your own time zone.
