English grammar and literature tutoring

For native English speakers who want to write with precision and read with real understanding. School-age students from 10 up, college students, and adults.

Grammar is the foundation of clear thinking

Many native speakers were never really taught grammar. They can't say why a sentence is wrong, only that it feels off. That shows up in essays that wander, punctuation that guesses, and writing that doesn't reflect how intelligent the writer actually is.

I teach grammar as a tool for saying exactly what you mean: sentence structure, punctuation, agreement, clauses, and style. Then we put it to work in real writing.

Literature, read closely

At Oxford, I learned to read a text line by line and build an argument from evidence. I bring that to novels, short stories, plays and poetry. Students learn to understand what they're reading, notice how it works, and write about it with confidence.

What lessons can include

  • Grammar and punctuation: the rules, the reasons, and how to apply them
  • Sentence structure and style: variety, clarity and control
  • Essay writing: thesis, structure, evidence and analysis
  • Literary analysis: theme, character, language and form
  • Set texts: the novels, plays and poems students are studying in school or college
  • Vocabulary: precise, expressive word choice
  • For adults: polishing professional and academic writing, or reading great literature with a guide

Students receive a written summary after lessons, and parents of younger students get a clear account of each session.

For parents: Before you book, please make sure your child knows about the lessons and wants to take part. Students who choose to be there make real progress; students signed up without being asked usually don't. Talking it through together first makes all the difference. A parent or guardian also needs to be present for the first lesson. The lesson stays focused on the student, but it's a chance for you to see how I work and share anything I should know.

Jeffrey was well prepared and did a great job of drawing on my son's interests and keeping him engaged throughout the lesson. My son looks forward to the next class each time. It's important to have a teacher who really connects with the student, not just gives lessons. My son and I are happy to have found Jeffrey as his English teacher.
